Initial Consultation & Interview Session

The initial interview session is designed to be a time when we can meet and get to know each other.  This will be the time for you to decide how you feel about us working together to bring about the best labor and birth experience possible.  This visit is free of charge and does not carry any obligations to my services.  If you feel that we will work together well, we can begin scheduling our prenatal visits.

Prenatal Visits

The Prenatal visits are designed to meet your needs and fit your schedule.  There are two prenatal visits included in the fees (more are available at an extra fee), as well as the option for one visit to your medical care provider in order for your provider to meet me and to ensure he/she knows who I am at the time of delivery.  During the first visit, I will answer any questions you may have, provide you with a packet of information concerning your labor and birth experience, and will help you develop your personal birth plan.  At the second visit, we will again go over any questions you have and practice some breathing and relaxation techniques, as well as discuss when to call me once you feel that your labor has begun.

Labor Support

Labor support begins when and where you wish, whether that be in your home or in your hospital room.  Many mothers find they feel most comfortable laboring at home for as long as possible, while others are more comfortable in the hospital, knowing that a nurse or doctor is just outside the room.  It is your choice as to when and where you prefer that I join you once you labor has begun.  The most important thing to remember is that once you call on me for your labor support to begin, I will remain with you until after you and your family are settled and recovering well.

Immediate Postpartum Care

Immediate postpartum care means that I will stay with you for a time immediately after your little one makes his/her debut to ensure that you both are comfortable with breastfeeding and newborn care.  I will also stay to make sure that all of your needs, baby’s needs, and daddy’s needs are met and you are as comfortable as possible.  I will go over any questions you have and will even retrieve your first postpartum meal, as you will most likely be quite hungry after your exciting day (and dad will, too!).  Once you are settled, I will leave you to experience that essential bonding time as a new family!

Postpartum Visit

During the post partum visit, I will answer any questions you have regarding breastfeeding, the care of your new baby, and your changing body.  Often times, new parents find that they were so involved “in the moment,” that they are unable to remember large pieces of the labor and delivery experience after the event.    I will go over the entire process with you, fill in any parts that you cannot recall, and answer any questions you may have about events or procedures that took place.  And don’t forget, I’ll be there to coo at and cuddle your precious bundle of joy!

On-Call for You!

Being on-call for you means that any time, day or night, before and after the birth of your baby, I will be available to you through phone and email to answer any questions you may have.  Beginning 2 weeks before your due date, I will be able to be paged and will return your page immediately.  Remember that everyone has questions, so don’t be shy about asking!

References and Referrals

If you have any questions regarding breastfeeding or postpartum care that potentially require the attention of another healthcare professional, I will be more than happy to refer you to a lactation consultant or healthcare professional who will be able to help you through this transitional time.
